I woke up this morning to news reports of the attack on Benazir Bhutto. She was apparently seriously injured and in critical condition resulting from a suicide attack during a rally in the Pakistani city of Rawalpindi. My first thought was she would get through this one like she did the last suicide attack just a few months ago, in October. Well, when I arrived to work later in the morning I was completely devastated to learn that she had died. To millions of people, Benazir was their only hope of ever seeing democracy in a country that so desperately needs it. Today that hope seemed to have died with her. She was a great loss. An entire nation mourns.
Benazir, may you rest in peace. You are a true inspiration.
Benazir Bhutto, who was assassinated Thursday in Rawalpindi, was the first female prime minister of Pakistan and of any Islamic nation. She led Pakistan from 1988 to 1990 and again from 1993 to 1996.
