El Rastro

By the time I came back to Madrid, I was so exhausted. My body was begging for some downtime. Of course, I refused to slow down! My feet were itching...I had to get out, to see and be seen! Rest is for those that are six feet under (lol!). I, along with a newly-found Spanish friend, paid El Rastro a visit - to see what all the fuss was about.

Established during the Middle Ages, the medieval market known as "El Rastro" is one of the oldest ones of Madrid. Sellers and buyers, MadrileƱos and tourists mingle here, turning this market place into one of the most popular places of the city, and highly recommended by most travel books, such as my personal favorite DK Eyewitness . To fully appreciate El Rastro's essence, the best thing to do is to walk through the entire place, blend in with the crowd, watch & learn the art of bargaining, and let its ambiance enthrall you.

The best deals on souvenirs & knick-knacks can be found here. Although this place looks just like any other flea markets in the US, the things they sell at El Rastro are mostly brand new.

This pic is dedicated to my good friend Firecrotch.

One of the drawbacks to being here is when it gets too crowded. It becomes a perfect environment for pick-pocketers. Make sure to secure your purses and wallets. If possible, do not bring a purse at all.

Leather is plentiful.
